Matt Sewell
Can you introduce the piece and outline your process for creating it?
I applied my wine buying technique to the thought process behind my artwork. When i'm in a shop perusing the wine aisle, if I spot a label with a bird on it then I am 90% sure i will be buying it. I do have to consider the price - not too cheap and not to expensive. But if a bottle features a goldfinch on the artwork then i am !10% buying that bugger!
So i just cracked out the watercolours and the gouache and painted a lush goldfinch
Did the wine influence your artwork?
I’ve drank hundreds of bottles of Paso Primero, I know the craic!
How did it feel to be confined to a 11cm x 10cm box?
Piece of piss! I’ve designed artwork to fit on postage stamps to all the way up to the gable ends of massive buildings. It was definitely a bit pokey but nowt I couldn't handle.
When is the perfect moment to drink your wine?
It was shared with my wife Jess and friends over a sunday lunch after a lovely work up Earls Hill. Absolutely perfect.
